Preventive maintenance.

Maintenance of a Mobile Elevating Platform for People (MEWP) is the set of preventive operations to check the effectiveness and safety of the machines, according to the manufacturer’s instructions and according to the working conditions, frequency of use and specific legal standards UNE 58921:2017. The standards that apply are: Standard 58921:2017 and Standard CTN 58/SC 9 PEMP.

Maintenance must be recorded in a maintenance book, including all actions, dates, nature and frequency, upcoming maintenance actions, executable persons and the signature of the competent person in charge of carrying them out.

What aspects are valued in Preventive Maintenance?

Tires and wheels

The operator must supervise the tires, already included in the daily review and in case of finding any defects such as tears, cuts, punctures… the appropriate means must be put in place to solve the problem. The size and characteristics of the tires must be the same as those replaced. A foam-filled tire should never be replaced by an air-filled tire.

Fuel and oil levels.

Check fuel and oil levels in order to determine if refills are necessary. If necessary, make sure that the tank is the corresponding one in each case.

Protect the chassis from direct exposure to weld spatter and cut metal if such activities are being performed.

Annual inspection of lifting platforms.

The annual Lifting Platform Reviews are the periodic, structural, functional and operational checks of resistance and conservation, to guarantee the maximum performance of the machine in accordance with its design and manufacture, as well as the safety and health of the people who may be within its field of action.

Who should be held accountable?

• The competent personnel of the owner companies.
• Workshops with the necessary technical capacity for this purpose.

All verified transactions must be marked in the corresponding boxes of the Periodic Review Sheet. They should be kept up to date for any inspection or supervision for their use.

The details of the owner, machine, model, serial number, hours of operation, address, as well as the name and signature of the technician who carried out the inspection and the date of completion must be included.

The results of the overhauls must be made available to the relevant authorities for the entire life of the machine or until the next overhaul.

Annual forklift overhaul.

The required inspections must be carried out on forklifts, according to the UNE-58452:2017 Standard.

Forklift Truck Inspections are the periodic, structural, functional and operational checks of resistance and conservation, to guarantee the maximum performance of the machine in accordance with its design and manufacture.

As well as checking aspects related to the safety and health of people that may be within their field of action.

• In the Handling Trucks, working up to 40 hours a week, maintenance must be carried out every 12 months.
• In forklifts that work between 40 and 80 hours a week, under normal conditions, and forklifts used for lifting people, every 6 months.
• Forklifts that work more than 80 hours per week under normal conditions and forklifts that work in harsh environments, such as saline and maritime environments, quarries and other areas with an abundance of abrasive products, every 4 months.

The competent person carrying out the verification must draw up a written report of the verification. The report, dated and signed, with the results of the operations must be made available to the relevant authorities for the entire life of the machine or until the next safety check.
